I once almost had this happen (only went through the procedure for it, just in case I had to fly Y, but didn't want to invoke this at all, as I wanted my PPS sectors for flying in Raffles (stupid rule, as I would fly Y on SQ anytime, if they gave me the sectors!)

What happens is that they give you a form which you can use to claim the fare differential at some point, and they sign and stamp it for you - with all the flight details (this was at Changi itself)...

However, SQ managed to get me into Raffles about 20 mins before the DEL flight departed the gate, so I had to sprint from the SKL all the way out there....but this was after I had spent 2 days waiting for space at SIN !! (on my own account, as the &*#& TA gave me a waitlisted seat for this sector)

Btw, try to avoid that DEL-SIN-DEL flight - it's almost impossible to get good seats in Raffles...
