You have to give up your current passport to get a new one. There are many versions of expedited service. I needed a very quick turnaround 10 years ago and arranged it easily at the main Boulder, CO post office. It took two days, if I remember right. To get it done faster, you need to go in person to one of the passport centers in a big city as described in other posts here.
