Personally, I prefer the CP, but do stay at the HI if the price difference between the two is large. As you say, the difference in quality is not that great, but generally I get better rooms at the CP.
Sometimes I have seen the CP cheaper, but not that often.

Given it's going to be over the Easter weekend, I'm guessing the HI will be busier than the CP, with more leisure and fewer business travellers. The CP is showing around a AUD 80 premium over the HI on the nights of interest. I may end up using points instead, in which case the question of the Platinum upgrade becomes irrelevant - but not sure yet. 15000 points for the HI vs 25000 points for the CP definitely swings it towards the HI though, if I go down the points path.
