When did you travel A8 last time?
My last trip on the A8 was just four weeks ago, and I still curse that particular trip. Even when the road is clear, it's annoying, and the last time I took it I was stuck in traffic for 3 hours. Not an experience I'd like to repeat anytime soon, and I'd advise you to stay well clear of it.

I know there are roadworks on the A3 motorway between Köln and Frankfurt, but they're not that bad, especially considering the times you#d be passing by them. I would prefer A3 over A8 any day.

Agreed, and toward this end I would consider getting up to date information off a German traffic website while still in Belgium. I recommend www.swr3.de - to get to the traffic report click on "Verkehr" under the "Info" tab. Unfortunately, it's only offered in German, but you should get the general idea. "Stau" means a total traffic jam, "stockender Verkehr" is slow-moving traffic.

Feel free to PM me should you have any questions. Have a nice drive!
