I would go for the Nikon D80

I have been window shopping for a digital SLR. So far, I think the Nikon D80 comes closest to my requirements. I too was (and still am) a serious shutterbug transitioning 5 years ago to digital imaging.
Found Costco offers a package including camera body, 2 lenses (18-55 & 55-200mm) and a carrying bag for $1299. The online store is currently SOLD OUT. Suggest to check with local stores near you.
Worthwhile to read some reviews and comparisons before buying. www.dpreview.com offers a review and some sample photos taken with the camera. You can also use their "buying guide" if you so incline.
I always like Nikon products.
