Carry-Ons Removed from Flight for Weight Restriction

While flying my three PNR Fly 3 Fly Free run this weekend, I had something interesting happen that I had never seen nor heard happen (neither did Baggage Claim in LAS). The entire trip was booked as BWI-DEN-PHX-LAX-LAS-SFO-PHX-DEN-BWI. I got pretty good service on all legs with BWI-DEN-BWI upgraded both ways. I got to know Ted pretty well in two days. However, my issue came up with the PHX-LAX.

Flying PHX-LAX on Saturday, I dropped off my carry-on at the end of the jetway. Imagine my surprised upon arriving in LAX to find out that my carry-on wasn't on the flight. Neither were the carry-ons for eight other people, including one UA crew member. I had never heard of this happening, but it did to me. I wasn't concerned for myself because I figured I'd get the bag back later in the evening but two of the passengers were an older couple on their way to catch a cruise to Hawaii that evening.

What made it more interesting was the comment made to me by a PHX gate agent yesterday as I passed back through and mentioned that my carry-on was one of those that was taken off the flight. First, he said they were taken off because they were easy to take off. The problem I told him is that they had no idea what our final destinations were when they did that. When I mentioned that there were people going on a cruise out of Honolulu, he gasped. UA would have to pay an extra $100 to deliver the bag there and then pay for the helicopter to deliver it to the ship.

I eventually met up with my bag back in Baltimore late last night. The folks on the baggage line were very helpful. They were going to have it delivered to me at home, but when I recognized that they would do it before I got back to BWI I had them just hold the bag there.

Anyone else ever have their carry-ons removed from a flight??
