Northwest dropped "orient" from their name in 1986 when they took over Republic. Although they were (and still are) a big carrier to the orient, they probably thought that "orient" conveyed a narrow representation of what they were becoming. After all, they were expanding into Europe and became a much stronger carrier domestically with the inclusion of Republic.
