Yep the best bet would be to buy the points if you think your not going to make the target for Platinum.
Another way would be to find someone with a spare 5k of points and see if they are willing to do some sort of deal with you and they can "gift" them to you.

And here's an interesting thought re gifting...
I find it bizarre that gifted/transfered points count towards status. What (besides ethics and morals) would prevent the following, I wonder?
Member A (with large balance) in December 2006 transfers 60000 points to Member B, thus granting Member B Platinum through to Dec 2007.
Member B in Jan 2007 transfers the 60000 points back to Member A, thus granting Member A Platinum through to Dec 2008.
Repeat ad infinitum...
Sure, that will cost US$300 for the points transfer each time, but for up to 2 years of Platinum, this sounds like a big loophole that should be closed (I can't see anything in the T&C that stops it).
Unless, PC has the view that Platinum status is effectively purchasable for US$300?
