I think a few of those stops were not strictly speaking necessary. I am almost CERTAIN that NW flew nonstop ORD-NRT in the 83-85 time range. My dad flew it once, as I recall. Perhaps it wasn't daily, but it did go. This was before the 747-400s, but they had oodles of 747-200s.
