I agree with Nachria, except that I would up the friendly-smiling-and-professional figure to 99.5%. Management seems to have re-trained the pool staff to improve service levels, and I hope the front-desk improves too. Those young women are fine people; I'm not saying they're not. But the level and manner of service is below what the rest of the hotel delivers. They act more like airline lounge dragons than the first and last point of contact a guest has with the hotel, notably at the point when the guest has to pay.

I should have provided a link in my post yesterday, and I'm sorry for not having done so. My comment about Peter4's interesting views of Thai people, which happened to have been made in the context of hotel management in the Thailand forum, can be found here. A quotation, in which he responded to a question by billp, is below.

Yes. Based on over two years of careful observation, that is exactly my starting point when dealing with local people here.

I would not employ any Thai person to manage anything, certainly nothing as complex as a hotel, even a small hotel. I would not trust any Thai person with money, even with one day's business receipts, unless there was a strong, counter-party in the background, such as a family connection.
I do not trust any Thai to do what I think they promised to do, so I am always making backup plans for important matters.
...
But, managing hotels, and similar business organizations, is certainly not among their cultural talents. Of course, one is always happy to find the odd exception.
The underlining is mine.

For the record, I am a he, not a she.
