To me, the PEN and KUL routes are essentially commuter services, and I expect decent service and a nice clean plane. I don't expect a 'private jet' experience.
As for the hot sandwich - I can't help but think it's to cater to the Asian customer base, because they used to serve cold sandwiches on this route. I've often heard locals comment that cold food (like salads and sandwiches) don't seem like a real meal. It's not that nobody in Singapore/Malaysia eats sandwiches, but the preference clearly steers to piping hot meals. I wouldn't be surprised if the hot sandwiches are a way to make the meal seem more substantial.
