I reluctantly paid the fee as it would push me over 200,000 miles this year thus giving me 2 extra systemwides. I didn't see great savings doing this instead of paying a higher fare and using miles. Since I frequently travel with family members who are not 1K, upgrades seem more frequent for them if we are using systemwides to upgrade rather than miles.
