Cars are expensive. I have hired cars in Italy and France and you can expect to pay 90 Euros for something very basic. When you go to fill up you will be shocked, I had a VW Polo 1.3 or 1.4 and it cost me 55 Euros to fill up. From memory highway tolls will be about 7 Euros/100km. Thats why I suggested trains cheaper and less hassles.
