Northwest gives you a minimum of 500 miles if it is a flight segment of 500 or less miles. If the flight is over 500 miles, you get actual miles. So, a flight of 56 miles (Northwest's shortest route: Flint to Detroit) earns you 500 miles but a flight a flight of 501 miles earns you 501 miles.
