So why not just pay £100 extra at the time of booking, guaranteeing your seat in CE (as well as the full points and miles) and allowing you to OLCI into a decent seat? Most of the cheaper economy booking classes offer an upsell to CE for £50 each way, at least if booked on ba.com, at the time of booking.
There is at least one route from LGW (LUX) where the CE cabin is often fuller than the ET cabin and waiting to upgrade on the day could backfire.
