Which is what made me recall my WC experience - from the OP, she wouldn't make a phone call to verify either which IMHO she should have if she indeed couldn't access the gentleman's status in her computer. To me, it's poor customer service.
I'm also at a loss to understand how the WC agent had "already embarassed myself in front of my colleagues."
