For UK destined itineraries, try flying into UK and out of a neighboring country (ie. Ireland). Saved ca. $100 in taxes on a recent trip flying into LHR and ex-Shannon (plus a fare savings too). Taxes on this itinerary were equivalent to a USA-SNN-USA itinerary.
