If you're traveling in Y, I would book the short connection. Assuming an on-time arrival, 35 minutes is plenty of time at LAX given how small the terminal is. However, if you are traveling in J or F on the LAX-JFK segment, the problem is that virtually every LAX-JFK goes out full in J and F. So if you miss your flight, they'll put you on the next one (which, in your case, looks like that means waiting several hours for the redeye), but the chances of it having available space in J or F is remote.

BTW, the HNL-LAX flight you're looking at is on a 757. If you are traveling in F, you definitely will want to choose one of the flights on a 763.
