But I think otherwise you have it right. AA will be fairly flexible with their own metal if there have been schedule changes, but their hands are tied with a partner. I suspect the computer does try to reschedule you as close to the original departure time as possible, even if that means a change in COS (for which, by the way, they'll offer you no compensation). I suspect your only remedy if they had been unable to reaccommodate you in F would be to ask them to request that BA make inventory available for you (I suspect BA would say no) or ask to have your miles refunded.
