I think that this is a pretty isolated incident... I've not heard of very many diversions to an intermediate point en-route. I'd be interested to know what was actually wrong with the plane. Indeed, it appears that the many reported problems with mechanical delays out of Chicago (mostly on 747s) seem to be significantly down this year. Hope you get on your way soon.
As an aside, I took this flight once and connected over to TG when it was the only way I could get to BKK one December. It is probably the worst trip I've ever had on UA. I got grilled by an air marshal on my DCA-ORD flight, then ate one of the worst vegetarian meals I've ever had on a plane, let alone in Business class on a transpac (boiled zucchini and roasted potatoes), then got to have a drunk lady from coach be seated across from me in Row 9 to recover for the last few hours of the flight. Followed by TG coach from KIX-BKK. Wow, I'd forgotten about that trip.
