I wish I hadn't listened when Qantas said I needed their FF program for the One World credit. I even told them I had an AA account. Arg!
Better check your fare class, most discount fares with QF will earn miles on QFF but earn 0 miles on AA. So you might want to determine how many AA miles you will earn before trying to reverse the credit. If you decide to do so, you will first need to contact QF to remove the credit from QFF, and then contact AA to get credit to AA. It is possible but takes a while and doesn't always go smoothly. Chances are that QFF is the only way to earn miles for your fares.
As for future strategy, you have to check the fare basis and see what it earns in the various OW plans. For discounted fares you may have to keep crediting to different plans. These rules change regularly, so you have to check the current rules (which takes about 30 seconds at each web site) rather than relying on comments about the past rules (as that advice may no longer match the current program rules).
