Maybe because it is the volume of stuff the collect. Maybe it costs too much and they don't want the liability. In any case, its gone, so your best bet is to find Santa.

When flying back through NRT 2 weeks later, I asked them in the FC Lounge if they happened to find a book.
5 mins later, it was in my hand.
On the other hand AA, would do nothing to help me find my $300 headphones (not bose).
