As a kid my Dad would fly me to Dallas every summer from Newark. Ticket prices were consistently in the $400s every year from 1975-1985. I usually flew Braniff until they went under and then took an interesting flight on Piedmont EWR-RDU-CLT-DFW. Dad called it the "hopscotch fare".

But I agree that ticket prices have stayed steady as inflation has marched on.
