The simplicity of the challenge doesnt change. A simple 3500mile J class return still gets Platinum. The problem is the metal flown - and I guess you have to suffer AA business class seats rather than suffer (for me) QF service.
It does seem a logical commercial decision to restrict. The one thing I am not sure about and havent had a chance to consider the economics of yet is whether AA make any money out my FF scheme transactions - given a broad mix of oneworld carriers for earning and equally a broad range of carriers for rewards as well.
