How can I "create an overnight layover" in MSP?

I am planning a trip to California on Northwest Airlines (from the East Coast) and would like to stop over in Minnesota (MSP) but do not want to pay extra for the ticket. I read somewhere that I can come into my connection City (MSP) on the last flight of the day and then go out the next day on the first flight without paying a stopover fee. I see no way to do that on the Northwest web site.

Any advice on how to create a flight schedule with the longest layover possible so I can get together with family in Minnesota.
