That is what most Hilton FF'ers believe. Consensus is that online check in is worthless to get an upgraded room or, for that matter, even to expedite checkin, since you still have to stand in line.

The only benefit I have found is that some properties, if you call ahead and they give you an upgrade, it will show up the evening before and you can check in, thus pretty much securing the upgrade. But -- imo, too labor intensive. I refuse to call in for the most part, and then on top of it to hope that it is reflected in online checkin is just too much to deal with. I'll take my chances the old fashioned way.
