Some HHilton properties allow this on the online check-in. I'm not sure if it applies to all hotels, but I know it works for some HGI properties. Keep trying. I'm just glad to get a room away from the elevator and ice machine, although my luck usually ends up pitting me up next to a noisy couple.
I have used this feature too, but unless you are regular to the hotel and know which rooms you would prefer, they don't offer a room-map of the hotel, so you have no idea where the rooms you are picking are located.
