The EC just tell you to fax the reciepts to the Travel History Records Dept and then in about 2 weeks the details post to your account.

You may be thinking about the discounted upgrades that you can purchase when checking-in from ex-US destinations. Here check-in staff specifically tell you that you cannot claim the miles/points. Even then I, and I'm sure others on this Board have mentioned that they have successfully claimed.
Even thought the original booking (prior to upgrade) is a redemption?
