Similar dilemma, got a couple of trips coming up when I will be lugging my new DSLR, having seen the pretty strict controls at LHR I have decided to pop for a photo back pack. I will then pack the small camera carry bag in the checked baggage, stuffed with odds and sods, so I can use that when I get to destination.
Tamrac Adventure Series and LowePro Orion Trekker II are the leading contenders, I just haven't bent the plastic yet.
