In her case I would have just lied because nobody can prove it was her.
Just like if you got caught drinking and driving.. always deny otherwise you'll have a tuff chance fighting with a lawyer.
Or better yet, don't drink and drive. Ethical issues of lying to the police aside, I suspect that most criminal lawyers will tell you that it's far worse to get caught lying than it is to just refuse to answer questions in the first place.
