There's nothing to stop the original poster from going back and deleting their post if they're not happy with the edited version. Many times just one line needs to be edited from a post that could be several sentences long.

When there is a personal attack involved, I don't think the moderators should wait and let the poster correct his error. They should deal with it promptly.
