No accomodation or compensation was offered other than boarding passes for the first flight out in the morning. I booked hotel room and paid for cab myself obviously.

FYI, this was on paid F tickets (A fare IIRC, if that's what they consider "discounted"), and I'm a brand-new 1k.

Should I be due any compensation?
I think that's really bad service. UA should have been proactive in EWR when they realised this was happening (it's not a surprise to them when a plane leaves 2-hours late because the inbound is late...this is easy to figure out well before the late plane arrives in EWR). You should have been rebooked from EWR on a non-stop to LAX or offered a cab to JFK compliments of UA and booked on a flight from JFK to LAX non-stop.

But too often ground agents just want to send you on to your next stop so you become someone else's problem.

All that said, you should have been offered a hotel and meal vouchers in DEN provided this was not weather related (that always gets them off the hook). But from a Customer Service perspective for 2 pax traveling on First Class tickets (even if it is A, it's still an expensive ticket and you're still a valuable passenger) they should have paid for your hotel anyway.
