you can still read unbroadcast ssid's. on a mac use kismac, not sure what it is on a PC. I finally just added a WEP to my SSID since it was not broadcast at the time, I know it slows down the transfer etc but where I live i don't need anyone gaining access to my network.
WEP is not secure. It can be cracked within a matter of minutes. WPA using a long passphrase is much more secure.
