If you want
only airline FF miles, definitely go for a category 1-5 travel package. Here's a sample calculation to show you why.
Assume you want 100K FF miles to be deposited into your U.S. airline FF account. That will cost you
two #566 awards at 125K Marriott Rewards points each for a total cost of
250K points.
To get the same 100K with a travel package, request
one #082 award, which surprisingly, costs only 215K points for the same 100K FF miles
and a 7-night hotel stay in a category 1-5 hotel! Assuming you don't plan to use the hotel certificate, you can return it to Marriott Rewards for a credit of 45K points, leaving you with a net cost for your 100K FF miles of only
170K points!
Why a category 1-5 package rather than a category 6 or category 7 package? The category 6 package for 100K FF miles costs 230K points and the "refund" for returning the hotel cert is 50K points, leaving a net cost of 180K points. The category 7 package costs 250K points and the hotel cert refund is 55K points, leaving a net cost of 195K points. Thus, the category 1-5 package is the best of the three deals.
The #083 package award at a cost of 235K points, which includes 120K FF miles and a 7-night cert for a category 1-5 hotel stay, is the overall best deal for FF miles. Assuming you return the hotel cert for a credit of 45K points, the net cost will be 190k points. That works out to a net cost per FF mile of slightly less than 1.6 points per FF mile. That compares to a net cost of 1.7 points per FF mile with the #082 award.
