I'd head up the Northway aka I-87. From the Albany area, it's 2 1/2 hours (150 Minutes) to Lake Placid NY. Watch out of the NY State Troopers, who do enforce traffic laws.

Are you doing this trip in one day? If not, there are several hotels in town. LP also has plenty of things to do. Google Lake Placid.

If you're meandering, you can drive the backroads from LP south, back to Utica. From Utica take I-90 east to Albany. Then, 87 south.
