I always thought that only Spiff can do that here.
After all, he has this magic rock...

Anyway, if you want to gift an upgrade, I suggest to gift a UA MP SWU printed for LH.

Or waste a ridiculous amount of miles.

But since you except a miracle, here we go: You buy yourself a ticket for that flight on a seperate itinerary, apply and clear the upgrade for your buddy in advance, then cancel your ticket later. @:-)
