Smile NYC/NJ CO mini DO January 20, 2007

Mark January 20, 2007 on your calendars!
[Description last updated 19:24EST January 16, 2007]

We're going to have a CO mini-do on Saturday, January 20, 2007. This time we are going to take a break from Newark. It will truly be an "Only in New York" event. There will be two Saturday events, an afternoon tour, and a dinner. We will also have a smaller get-together in NJ on Friday night for those arriving early.

SATURDAY DINNER: The main event will be dinner at Sammy's Roumanian, located at 157 Chrystie Street (at Grand) in New York City. Dinner will commence at 6pm. Please plan to arrive promptly! To quote one review, "This is the place that put the heart in heart attack." You will need to check your cholesterol count at the door and be prepared to eat like back in the old country. While there will be vegetarian food items, vegetarians will likely find that an extremely limited menu awaits them.
  • Payment for dinner:
We will have a fixed-price, family-style meal. This includes numerous appetizers (leave some chopped liver for me, okay?), side dishes, main courses, all the schmaltz you can eat, and dessert. I can assure you that you will not leave hungry. The price for dinner, including tax and tip, is $65 per person. This does not include any drinks other than Bloomberg water and an egg cream with dessert (Want to make your own egg cream? go here). Attendees will need to send a check to me in advance of the event. Attendees have been sent private messages with the information necessary to complete payment.

  • Payment for drinks:
You will be responsible for paying for your own drinks the night of the event. There will likely be one check for this. Please do not stiff your fellow FlyerTalkers.
SATURDAY TOUR: Prior to dinner, there will be a 3pm tour of New York's newest, and probably safest, large office building, the newly-rebuilt #7 World Trade Center. (article here)Aside from the interesting details of the construction, new safety features for high-rises, energy efficiency, etc., the upper floors and the roof afford excellent views of New York and the surrounding area. Also, by the date of this event the steel for the new Freedom Tower should be rising out of the WTC site across the street. Tours of this building are not normally offered. The event will be open to a limited number of people. Those confirmed as attending the tour are listed below. Meet in the lobby of 7 World Trade Center at 3:00pm. The tour will last approximately one hour.

FRIDAY NIGHT: Informal dinner & drinks at 7:30pm at a good casual Italian restaurant in Hoboken, NJ. Please plan to arrive promptly at 7:30pm.
  • Location:
    Cafe Michelina
423 Bloomfield St (corner 5th St.)
    Hoboken, NJ 07030-4810
    +1.201.659.3663

Bloomfield St is 1 block off of Washington Street (main st.)
If you want to drink, bring your own bottle! The restaurant does not sell alcohol.

  • Reviews:
  • Parking:
Parking is on the street (read the signs carefully!) or in a nearby garage
    Street parking:
    • At meters, make sure you check the signs.
    • If you are stubborn or lucky (like Xyzzy) and find street parking (no meter) check the signs carefully click here to see them:
      1. Make sure you are at least 15 feet from a crosswalk. You will get ticketed if you are too close, not all corners are marked with yellow
        paint.
      2. Make sure you park at a sign that says, "Resident Parking Only, ALL OTHERS FOUR HOURS". This sign has a WHITE BACKGROUND with GREEN LETTERING. It is okay for you to park here after 6pm all night.
      3. DO NOT PARK where it says, "Resident Parking Only". This sign has a GREEN BACKGROUND with WHITE LETTERING! You will get booted here immediately, unless you have a valid Hoboken Resident Sticker.
    Parking garages:
    • Central Parking - 315 Hudson Street
    • Imperial Parking (expensive) - 333 River Street
    • Hoboken Midtown Garage (cheapest) - 330 Clinton St.

  • Public Transportation:
    • PATH Trains - (Take any train towards HOBOKEN) PATH Stations in Manhattan are on 6th Avenue at 33rd St, 23rd St, 14th St, 9th St. There is also a station at Christopher Street (West Village near the Hudson River). You can also get the Hoboken PATH at the World Trade Center. In Jersey City, there are PATH trains at Exchange Place, Grove Street, Pavonia/Newport and Journal Square. You can also catch the PATH in Newark/Penn Station (But you will have to switch trains at Journal Square)
      • PATH Turnstiles take NYC MetroCard, PATH Quickcard or dollar bills and coins.
      • The walk from the PATH train to Michelina's is 10 minutes.

    • There is a 24 hour taxi stand at the Hoboken PATH Train entrance on River Street/Hudson Place. It's a flat fare within city limits up to 4 passengers (going to same destination). If you are single, don't be surprised if they take on another fare that's "on the way". Since it's flat fare, it doesn't matter.

    • NJ Transit Bus #126 from Port Authority Bus Terminal (New York) (Bus fare boxes take coins and dollar bills or you can buy a ticket at NJT ticket machines at PABT. The bus runs down Washington St (main street) and Michelina's is 1 block off of Washington at 5th Street.

    • Hoboken is also reachable by NY Waterway Ferry and NJ Transit Hudson-Bergen Light Rail system.

Some notes:
  • Following dinner on Saturday we will hit a bar for drinks at about 10pm.
  • While CO Insider is planning on attending, do not expect that there will be any sort of last minute announcement of a Continental-sponsored tour, gift, show, dinner, etc.
  • If you have any questions or concerns, post here or send a private message to xyzzy.
This event is primarily geared toward those who participate on the Continental forum, however all FlyerTalkers are welcome to attend. That said, the restaurant has a limited number of seats. If we run out of room, priority will be given to those who have purchased airline tickets and/or those who do not live in the NYC/NJ area. As the organiser, any such decisions will be made entirely at my discretion.

Please respond to this thread so I can keep track of the attendees. Indicate which of the three weekend events you plan on attending.
