I'm not sure when they'll be going, but I would assume over the summer.

My wife and I went for 3 days last end of September at the Turnberry. She attended the spa and loved it while I golfed. And fantastic golf it is.

The area (ayrshire) is relatively rural, and there are a handful of castles (Cluzean is worthy and gorgeous) closeby and some beautiful small towns, including the homeplace of Robert Burns and worth of visiting.

When you arrive at the Turnberry, you've gone through some very small towns to get there. Ayr (the biggest city) is approx. 40 km away. And I found it had some great restaurants, but otherwise didn't find a lot to do.

I think there is lots to be seen in rural Scotland, but I suspect the city of Edinburgh has more museums and such.

That said, the Turnberry has horseback riding, falconry, bird hunting, hiking, spa, archery, etc. I think one could spend a day here and there and have a great time.

I'd suggest 2-3 days at the Westin Turnberry, and 2-3 in Edinburgh. I'd put both on the plate and let them decide based on their interests.
