BUT, and I really don't mean/want to offend anyone here, but I have always had this quesion.

I have yet to see anyone look good with black or very dark polish. Not a single person, either when it was in style about 10 years ago, or this year that it came back. I don't think it's flattering to any skin tone.

I keep seeing people with black nails, and I just don't get it. Maybe it's because I'm fashion un-conscious. I tend to dress conservatively and/or classically. I've never been a trend setter & think I've read 2 issues of Vogue my entire life.

Are women simply doing this because it's "in" this year?
I started wearing the OPI LP last year so no, being "in" wasn't a consideration for me. Actually, I didn't realize until recently that nail/makeup colors changed that much(excluding blue eyeshadow from my teen years)!

I agree with Buster that having pale skin does make a difference! I guess it's all what each person likes. I personally wonder about some of the shades of red that some women wear! Red can be very tricky against the skin getting the right tone. The OPI LIncoln Park is dark, but not black and looks stunning (IMO ) with the blacks, greys and whites I tend to wear during the winter months better than reds. It's probably the same as some gals wear red or pink lipsticks while others prefer brown tones.

My best friend and I are total opposites in colors we gravitate to. She likes the pinks and teals, while I like the greens, greys and blacks. I love winter coats and boots while she loves sandals. We never have any fights about who gets what when we shop together!
