After writing this to another member I decided it would be appropriate to make it available to everyone since Vodafone Stars is a viable way to collect LH miles.

I wrote it in English for those that aren't that good at German but often phone in Germany. If anyone has any editing suggestions I can add them so this can remain a kind of reference.

The best way for you to sign up for Vodafone Stars is do the following:

1. Go to www.vodafone.de
2. Click on "Privat" in the middle of the page.
3. Click on Vodafone Stars in the banner on top.
4. Click on "Jetzt anmelden und kassieren" on the right (online you get 100 points for this)
5. If you don't have an internet password then you should click on "Hier geht's zur Anmeldung der Online Services" or if you have an internet password already go to step "10".
6. In field 1 type in your telephone number including prefix (i.e. 0172246XXXX)
7. In field 2 type in your customer password ("Kundenkennwort"). For post-paid (contract) customers you created the customer password when you signed the contract. For pre-paid (CallYa) customers the customer password is the first four digits of the Super-PIN. This of course presumes you have not changed it since.
8. If you have problems with the system not accepting the customer password then you should contact customer service at 1212.
9. You should then receive the internet password as an SMS (I can't repeat this step to check).
10. On the "Erstanmeldung" screen click on "Hier geht's zur Vodafone-Stars-Anmeldung, wenn Sie über ein Internet-Kennwort verfügen".
11. Enter your Handy number in field 1 and your internet password in field 2 and click on "OK". You are now registered.

Now if you want to collect Lufthansa miles you can click on "Lufthansa Miles and More" on the left once you are logged in. Then on the right you will see a special concerning Lufthansa Miles and More. If you click here and register you will get 1000 extra points (promotion until 31 July 2003).

Miles are credited once a month to your Lufthansa account. The conversion rate is 1:1.

If you want to collect extra miles go into the account area. For many of the changes such as password changes, address change, etc. you can receive 200 miles each. My hint: change everything and change it right back again. That will trigger the 200 miles for each action. You will get the credit only once a year. You can get a quick 1000-1500 miles for doing this.

Once a month there is a really simple survey to fill out. This nets you 100 miles.

If you have more than one SIM card, you can do all of this for each card.

You can also get miles for customer referrals for both contract and CallYa customers. My experience is this even works for old contracts. Cross referrals are not allowed and the system picks up on them.
