Agreed. Ask yourself what is the current value of a three year old coat. It is not about "depreciation value" but the value you would have to pay for a similar piece of garment in a (second hand) shop. From a legal point of view it is not relevant what you paid but what you have to pay today.
If I don't have a receipt, am I just screwed? I know they did give me an invoice slip that they handwrote the price on (600 Euro IIRC) but I don't remember what happened to it. I'll dig through my old vacation stuff and maybe it'll turn up.
If this coat were undamaged at a thrift store, it would be anywhere between $250-300. If I went to a better consignment shop and showed them the coat, would an estimate from them help establish the value?
