What people don't realize is above and behind the bin, there are light bulbs. If these bulbs breaks due to an oversized bag being forced into the bin, then yes, the flight will probably cancel, or get severely delayed, because they just created a safety hazard.
I have now been on two flights in the last year where this has happened - both light bulb breaks were in first class and both delays were nearly three hours long. Both times the passenger who was the one who broke the light was the one who also complained the loudest during the delay.
