The way that passengers stuff their bags to the fullest, some bags can not possibly fit into the bins. You will see passengers from the 1st time traveler all the way to the most experienced try to stuff their oversized bag into a bin that is too small.

What people don't realize is above and behind the bin, there are light bulbs. If these bulbs breaks due to an oversized bag being forced into the bin, then yes, the flight will probably cancel, or get severely delayed, because they just created a safety hazard.

The bins are not designed to be stuffed with an oversized bag....if your bag does not fit easily without cramming your bag to get it to fit, then it truly doesn't belong in the bin. It should have been checked.

I have seen people try to stuff their oversized bag into the bin and breaking the lights (even telling them that the bag will not fit, they will have to check it once everyone has boarded)

It doesn't happen often, but it does happen. Passengers don't stop to think of the ramifications of not following the height/width/length specifications given to them about their carry-on bags. Best rule of thumb, if your bag does not fit in that sizer at the gate, then it more than likely will NOT fit in the bin.

If a bin doesn't close or is broken, then nothing can be placed in that bin due to safety concerns.

I am surprised at how many people do shove/jam their bags into the bins, and am surprised that the amount of broken lights isn't higher. At the same token, I'm also surprised that the armrests on the aisle aren't broken more watching how people pull their bags out of the bins and allowing them to fall on the arm-rests....same thing, from 1st timers to most frequent travelers.

Kudos to the OP for actually listening to the announcements!!!
