I believe the companion needs a SEN to be able to fly (that's why it's called a SEN companion award, isn't it?).
However, it's interesting to note that the companion does not need to fly all the way with the SEN as I was told yesterday by the SEN hotline in D. The SEN could have a different final destination further away (it doesn't work the other way round) than the companion but all flights the companion takes must be together with the SEN. This could leave some room for interesting itineraries, I guess...
