I recall overhearing when returning to SYD a couple of weeks ago that people continuing to MEL would not be able to take duty free purchased in SFO or SYD. That was a couple of weeks ago. This is the "no liquid" rule that has been imposed on all US flights.

As for the matches, I'm very surprised you are allowed to board with them in the US. They always ask in SYD for lighters, matches etc.
