There has however been massive growth in capacity on this route in the last few years. Whilst the gateway to China aspect cannot be ignored, it's gone from 6 non-stops a day (1xVS, 2xBA, 3(?)xCX) to 1xVS, 1xQF, 1xNZ, 3xBA and up to 4xCX, plus the Oasis flight that goes daily from next year. Something obviously has to give...
Interesting observation though, and as you say will be good to see how it plays out.
And VS is going to be going twice daily and I believe QF is considering continuing one of its SYD-HKG flights onto LHR. That is alot of capacity.
