My guardian angel told me that LH overbooks F only in very rare circumstances...like the situation you just experienced.

Usually it's an absolute No-No, but if a regular and frequent F-customer wants a seat on a flight he's usually on, they find a way to get him on like in this example, but it's really very rare. Otherwise booking F is a guarantee for a seat in that cabin.
