I was interested by your location line - my only trip to China was 2 weeks in Guangzhou about 18 months ago to do a systems upgrade, with a weekend trip to HK. Sadly my Rolex can't keep time, but it sure looks good. Kicking myself for not buying pearls, but by the time I thought of it there really wasn't time.
Stayed at the Garden Hotel and really enjoyed wandering the streets around there in the evenings.
Yeah the Garden Hotel area is pretty 'lively'. Alot has changed in Guangzhou in 18 months, some for the better some for worse.
Forget pearls here, you should check out the Jade Market. I bought a 20" diameter jade chinese horoscope wheel for US$40 - obviously not the best quality 'jade' but it looks stunning in my office!
