Edited to add: I haven't chosen a hotel yet. The Conrad sounds fine, but I've stayed at a couple of really small hotels, like the Perak Lodge in Little India, and some shophouse hotel in Chinatown that I can no longer find the name of. (I'll search for it -- I'd like to stay there again!)

Ordinarily, I adore luxury hotels. However, in Singapore, I prefer the smaller hotels. They make me feel like I really am in a foreign place. I like the wood floors and plaster walls and the tall, shuttered windows. It's fun to be so close to everyday Singaporean life. And, best of all -- I can open the windows!

Is there anyone else who's interested in staying at a small hotel, too? If so, I'd be happy to find a place and get a few rooms booked.
