Barrington sounds like the place you may be looking for. Has some nice older homes and a decent downtown area within walking distance of decent housing. The drive to Des Plaines should be close to 1/2 hour but during rush hour that could be stretched. Barington tends to be viewed less pretentious than some of the other towns you mentioned.
